Back to School!

I am safely ensconced in a hotel in Hartford.  Tomorrow, I start my classes.  The alarm clock is ready to go.  I have to write a short paper and then I can go to bed, although I don’t expect to sleep well tonight.

The town where Daniel’s gala is tomorrow night is actually closer than home, so I’ll see my guys tomorrow night in Waterbury.  The kids are performing 2 numbers from Fiddler, and the cast is up for 9 awards.  I’m so excited to be able to go!

As we loaded up the car, Dumbledore ran down to the garage and tried to get in the car.  He was certain he was going with me (after all he always has before!).  I felt really bad for the little guy, he doesn’t understand.

Silly Dog

Dumbledore is growling and grousing and complaining because there's another dog on the TV. But the TV is off - it's his own reflection.

The nerve, the utter unmitigated gall of that other dog...

Today was a nice day.

We took Dumble to the vet (he got shots, but he needs steroids for skin inflammation and to have his teeth cleaned and some removed. Maybe they have a payment plan for the teeth cleaning?)

I had my yoga class at the hospital from 10 to 11 or so (there's chatting afterwards), then I went to my local salon and had a mani-pedi (shimmery dark red - ooh la la) and an eyebrow wax.

Then there was a presentation back at the hospital (called Look Good ... Feel Better) where I got a goody bag of makeup and stuff and a cookie.

Then I ran downstairs for my 2pm radiation treatment and was able to move my appointment for the Friday after Thanksgiving to right after yoga so I don't have to make 2 trips to the hospital.

And now I'm home with all my guys and my puppy.

Yoga at the Swim Center

This morning I made it to the free yoga class at the hospital. It was lovely and the teacher (and the other participants) was really nice and sweet. At the end, she recited something while we all tried to meditate, and I felt a little teary. Another gal started to cry (it turned out she'd had to put her dog to sleep last night). I went over to tell her I'd started to cry to (so she wouldn't feel weird) and she told me about her dog, and the next thing I know I'm rubbing her arms and giving her hugs. I felt so badly for her loss.

Another lady, with sparse white hair, was looking at these cute little knitted caps the teacher had (kind of a flapper style with a big knitted flower) and admiring a tan one. When she asked how much they were (she wanted something warmer than a ball cap for the winter) the teacher told her folks at her church had knitted them and they were free. By this time, there's just me, the teacher, the crying lady and her husband, and the hat lady. The teacher was asking about the surgery, and saying she'd be thinking of me, and then offered me a shawl that was also knit by ladies from her church. It's a cream tweedy yarn with earthy shades of pink and lavender (it's really lovely), and it came with a poem. She put it over my shoulders and had the other ladies touch my back while I closed my eyes and she read the poem. I got a little teary again, but it was very sweet. Then they all wished me luck, and reassured me I'd be calmer once I had the surgery and the results and a plan.

Afterward, I went to the mall, picked up prescriptions at Target, had lunch and picked up a couple of CDs and a new pair of cozy PJs. Then I went to a nail salon and had a mani-pedi and a little massage. I feel quite a bit calmer than I did this morning. We're going to have to get up pretty early tomorrow to get to Greenwich by 8. The xanax helped last night, I had a good night - hopefully I'll sleep tonight as well.

Dumbledore is much better, he's off the meds and back to his old self, frisky and silly. He was savaging a rubber chicken this morning. (I love when he has something in his mouth and whips his head back and forth - he's such a nut). He's also been extra cuddly lately.

Poor Dumbledore!

Dumbledore's been sleeping poorly the last couple of nights. Sunday night, he just could not settle down.  He'd lie down, then get right back up and made a lot of little noises - drove us crazy.  I didn't have a lot of patience for him during the night, but after some sleep I realized that there was probably something wrong with him.  He's also been hanging out on the floor a lot instead of hopping up by us.  I decided to wait another day to take him to the vet (since I'd rather take him to his regular vet today than the emergency vet on Labor Day).  Last night was a little better but not by much.

He's got some pain in/near his spine in the area of his rib cage.  She prescribed an NSAID, and rest.  No rough play, gentle exercise (like walkies), help him up and down from furniture as mush as possible and hold him parallel to the floor (no lifting him under the armpits like a baby).  I have to give the medicine with food, so I stopped at the pet store and got some canned food (he usually eats only kibble and I wanted to get something he'd be sure to eat when I gave it to him).  He wouldn't drink the medicine from the dropper like my aunt's dog does, but I mixed it in the wet food and he scarfed it up.  I went shopping for a bit and he seems a little better already.

He's supposed to take it easy for about 6 weeks.  Poor baby!

(Update from the next morning - he slept all night and seems much better already!)

More About Dumbledore

We are asked many questions about Dumbledore - here are some of the most frequent:
How old is he? He was two in January.

How much does he weigh? He's about 6lb 4oz - both my boys weighed more than that when they were born!

Is he a Teacup Yorkie? Dumble is full-sized, but there is no such breed as "Teacup Yorksire Terrier." For more information see the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website (YTCA).

Where did you get Dumbledore? I bought him from a breeder I found through the YTCA. Breeders who belong to the Club have committed to the Club's code of ethics. I wanted to make sure I was dealing with a reputable dealer and not a puppy mill.

What's up with Dumble's nose? We believe that when Dumbledore was a baby, someone stoe his real nose and replaced with with a plastic nose. It is too perfect to be a "real" nose.

What's the scoop on Dumble's funky toes?
On his back right foot, his toes and claws curve away from each other instead of straight out. It was this supposed "flaw" that prevented him from becoming the show dog he was bred to be. It is our considered opinion that the reason funky-toed dogs are disqualified from being show dogs is that they are so superior in all other ways to ordinary dogs that it simply wouldn't be fair to the other dogs. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Dumbledore is my little friend. He comes to work with me every day, and he loves to greet all the customers. He never, ever bites, but he will try to kiss you if your face is in reach. Also, in the summer-time, if you are wearing open-toed shoes, your toes are fair game - it's puppy-pedicure time!

Dumbledore is a Yorkshire Terrier with a very silky coat. His hair is so smooth, he doesn't even need to be brushed every day. If his coat were more cottony, we'd keep him in a short "puppy coat" style, but since his coat is so low maintenance, we can enjoy the lovely way his hair swishes when he moves. He's groomed by Nancy of Handsome Hounds, who comes to the store with her mobile grooming salon, and makes Dumble gorgeous right here in our parking lot. I love the way he looks when she's done with him, and he's always glad to see her.

The only time he barks here in the store is when someone is outside and doesn't come in! It offends his sensibilities if they don't want to visit him - he thinks it's his due.

He likes to nap on the couch in my office, or in his puppy playpen in the Creative Studio. It's a lot like a regular playpen but it has a zip open door. He keeps his toys in there and naps in it when he gets tired from chasing after kids around the store. Every once in a while a child comes in who is nervous of dogs and we zip the door shut so he can't get out.

He almost never tries to run out the door, but every so often, if he needs to piddle, he makes a run for it. We have to make sure we pay attention when he tries to tell us he needs to go out.

His favorite toys are his "dead duck" (it looks like a rubber chicken but has a bill and webbed feet), and his lizard. He's had the dead duck for a long time, and it's still in one piece. It squeaks and makes a floppity sound when you shake it, and bounces a little when you throw it. It's his favorite fetching toy, and it's good for chewing too. The lizard is fuzzy and filled with something crinkly and a squeaker. It's really great for tug-of-war and makes a wonderful noise when you shake it. Dumble loves to hunt down his toys, pounce, then shake them until they are dead. Of course, the job is never quite done, so the process repeats endlessly.

When you are scrapping in the Creative Studio you have to watch what you leave on the floor (or drop). He's been known to run off with the crinkly wrapper of a set of embellishments (to shake it until it's dead, of course!) As he runs away with his prize, he grins with glee! But as soon as I say, "give it to Mommy" he drops it in expectation of a treat.

He's very motivated by treats. He will do anything for one, but he has to see the treat before he will perform. He will sit, stand, give you his paw, and lie down. He'll come when you call (if what he's doing is not too distracting,) and he'll put his nose into his harness if there is a treat on the other side.

Kids who come to visit the store love Dumble. Some of them detour Mom from a trip to Shop Rite or Bob's in order to say hello. My favorite moment was hearing a little voice pipe up with "He is here!" when he ambled out of my office.

He's very good company and can frequently be found on my lap while I work and craft. We're so glad he joined our family.

Doggie Pictures!

Here are the latest photos of Dumbledore. He was recently groomed, so you can see his eyes!

Dumbledore is a pure-bred Yorkshire Terrier. I bought him from a breeder in East Windsor, CT. He weighs 5 1/2 pounds and will be two years old in January.

People often ask if he's a "teacup" Yorkie. This link explains about teacup Yorkies. This link describes the difference between "puppy mill" and a responsible dog breeder. Who is Dumbledore?

Dumble is our family's newest member - a little Yorkshire Terrier. He's sweet and funny and cute and we all adore him. As a matter of fact, one of his nicknames is Dumble-dorable!

Dumble just luuurves people. When my older boy (19) has company, Dumble practically wags his back end off and becomes a squirmy little bundle of worship.

We got him to be company for me and I was planning to bring him to the store so he wouldn't be lonely when I started working full-time. But I worried that all the people in and out of the place would be overwhelming for the little guy.

Then in mid-December we had a holiday open house at our place, and after the first few people arrived (and were appropriately fawned over,) Dumble calmed down. He didn't bark when the doorbell rang, or when people let themselves in. Instead he busied himself doing an impression of a roomba. He did try to plant himself in my Mom's dinner plate when she left it too close to the edge of the coffee table, but mostly he foraged for crumbs around everyone's feet.

I think he's going to love being a shop-dog. Now if I can just get him over the car sickness...

The architects plans are awaiting landlord approval and will soon go out to contractors for bid.
